Let’s be honest: ACCA Performance Management (PM) is a bit of a beast. It’s that awkward middle sibling of the exams, not as straightforward as MA, but not quite the deep-dive strategy of APM. Every sitting, there are students who have worked their socks off, memorised the textbook cover-to-cover, and yet they still find themselves staring at a 46% or 48% on results day.
If you’re gearing up for your mock exam, or if you’re looking ahead to the next sitting, you need more than just "more study." You need a strategy. You need to know how the game is played.
I’ve seen exactly where the wheels come off for most students. So, before you sit down for your next mock, here are the 10 things you absolutely need to know to turn that "fail" into a solid "pass."
1. Knowledge isn’t enough (The 40% Plateau)
This is the most common trap. If you are consistently scoring between 40% and 49% in your practice questions, I have some good news and some bad news.
The good news? Your knowledge is likely fine. You probably understand what a shadow price is, and you likely know how to calculate a lifecycle cost, and I'm sure you can distinguish between a fixed and a flexible budget.
The bad news? Knowledge only gets you about 40% of the way there. ACCA PM is an application exam. The examiners are interested in much more than reciting a definition or completing a calculation. They want to know if you can use that concept to advise a business owner. If you’re stuck at 40%, stop reading the textbook and start practicing the application of that knowledge.
2. The "Blitz" Method
Three weeks before the exam is when the intense work happens. The "Blitz" phase. This isn't the time for light reading or watching videos while you eat your lunch.
During the Blitz phase, you need to do as many past questions as humanly possible under strict exam conditions. That means:
- No phone.
- No notes.
- No "just checking the answer for a second."
- A ticking clock.
If you don't practice the physical and mental stamina required to sit for three hours, you will crumble in the final hour of the real thing. Use the Blitz to build your "exam muscles."

3. Section C is a Performance
Section C is where the big marks live, but it’s also where students lose the most time. The secret to Section C isn’t just getting the right number; it’s about structure and presentation.
Think of the marker as a busy person (because they are). They have hundreds of scripts to get through. If your answer is a wall of text or a jumble of unlabelled numbers in a spreadsheet, they are going to struggle to give you marks. Use clear headings, use the spreadsheet functions correctly, and use the spreadsheet functionality to explain your workings. Even if your final answer is wrong, clear workings can bag you "own figure rule" marks that save your result.
4. Become a Native on the ACCA Practice Platform
I cannot stress this enough: do not do ALL your revision on a piece of paper or a standard Excel sheet. You must use practice using the official ACCA Practice Platform.
The interface is unique. The way the scratchpad works, the way the spreadsheet functionality behaves, and even the way you navigate between questions can be jarring if you aren't used to it. You don't want the first time you use the platform to be on exam day. You want to be so comfortable with it that you could navigate it in your sleep.

5. Time Management: The 1.8 Minute Rule
In ACCA PM, every mark is worth 1.8 minutes. That’s it.
If you get bogged down in a tricky calculation in Section A for ten minutes, you haven't just spent ten minutes; you’ve stolen time from Section C. Students spend ages trying to get a variance calculation to balance perfectly while leaving a 10-mark written question completely blank.
If a calculation is taking too long, guess and move on. It is much easier to pick up 2 marks for a simple written explanation than it is to hunt for that one missing part of a complex maths problem.
6. Don't Ignore Section B Case Studies
Section B is often the "forgotten" part of the exam. It’s three mini-case studies with five questions each. These are dangerous because if you misunderstand the scenario, you could potentially get all five questions wrong.
Read the 5 requirements first. Then read the scenario. Of the 5 questions some will be easier and some will be harder. The 1.8 minutes per mark doesn't apply here, instead its 18 minutes for each case study.
Pay close attention to the wording.
7. Target Your Weaknesses with Data
ACCA provides a brilliant tool called "My Exam Feedback" for students who have sat the exam before. Use it to help you understand your strengths and weaknesses. Then gift yourself more time focusing on the weaknesses.
Even if you haven't sat it yet, use your mock results to be scientific about your revision.
Don't just keep practicing the things you're good at because it makes you feel clever. If you're a whizz at CVP analysis but you break out in a cold sweat at the mention of Transfer Pricing, you know exactly where your next four hours of study need to go.
8. The Variances Masterclass
Variances are the "final boss" for many PM students. Planning and operational variances, mix and yield variances, it can feel like an alphabet soup of formulas.
The trick is to stop memorising formulas and start understanding the logic. Why did the price change? Was it because the manager bought cheaper, lower-quality materials? If so, how did that affect the usage variance? Once you understand the story behind the numbers, the maths becomes much easier. In my courses, we do a deep dive into this because it’s a guaranteed way to pick up "easy" marks that others leave on the table.

9. Get Expert Feedback (The 48-Hour Rule)
Self-marking is hard. It’s almost impossible to be objective about your own written answers. You’ll look at the model answer, see a few keywords you used, and think, "Yeah, I probably would have got 8 out of 10." In reality, an examiner might have given you a 3.
This is why my Revision & Mock Course (which kicks off on Sunday, 26th April, ahead of the 3rd June exam) is designed the way it is. I provide personal marking with copious feedback. And I don’t keep students waiting for weeks: I mark and provide feedback within just a couple of days. You get your feedback while the question is still fresh in your mind, so you can actually learn from your mistakes. Plus, students get direct WhatsApp support from me. If they’re stuck on a concept at 9 PM on a Tuesday, theycan just drop me a message.
10. The Mindset: The "Beat the Tutor" Challenge
Finally, you need the right mindset. You aren't just trying to "scrape a pass." You should be aiming for mastery.
To prove I mean business, I run a "Beat the Tutor" challenge. I scored 97% in my PM exam. If you take my course and manage to beat my score in the real exam, I will give you a full refund of your course fees plus a 50% profit.
Why do I do this? Because it changes the way you study. It pushes you to find those extra marks in the margins. I'm looking forward to the day when a student beats me!
